Who am I?



Hi my name is Vaneeza Samra Usman and this is my blog. I love to ski, read, listen to music, paint, play video games and spend time with family. I care a lot about my family and my friends. 



When I was a kid I was able to speak more of my first language than I do now because when I started school as a kid I gradually stopped using urdu and forgot it in the process of learning English. My first language is a big part of my life as my parents are always speaking with it around the house and even though I can understand it I can only say a couple of words in urdu. 


Language is important as it is the way that you communicate with people and get to know them better. It helps strengthen friendships and bond with your family. It is also very important to study new languages as it helps to strengthen your analytical skills and if you are going to pick business as your career path and you can speak a foreign language that will you more valuable in the marketplace. 




I have felt excluded due to language barriers a lot of the time as my favourite band is a K-Pop group and whenever they release a video I have to wait until someone has translated it so that I can watch it and understand what they are saying. I have also felt excluded due to these barriers as I once went to a party with my family and everyone there spoke fluent urdu except for me so I had some difficulty responding back to their questions in urdu as they didn't speak a word of english.

    We have many similarities between us!! Such as your hobby, I also like to ski, listen to music! And I love the way you love K-pop music which is from my country :)

    Hey Vaneeza,

    I love K-pop too! I understand it's hard to understand it but the music itself is so good that, forget the lyrics! There's always translations up! I understand you don't speak your mother tongue much, but in my case, I speak Malayalam a lot. I would ALL THE TIME if I could've! I communicate so much with my family and friends that it's more comfortable for me to use it than English. We're kind of different in that way. Hope to hear more from you ^^.

    Hi Vaneeza. One of the topics we will explore in this unit is our relationship to our Mother Tongue. I hope that this topics ends up being of interest to you. It was nice to learn more about you.

This week in class we analysed and discussed in groups the essay Mother Tongue by Amy Tan. In the essay Mother Tongue, Amy Tan describes that the kind of English that her mother uses is normally seen as "broken or incorrect" English. Throughout the text, Amy Tan expresses her experience of being an English speaker in a Chinese family and what stereotypes the English world has made about non-native English speakers. Some stereotypes about non-native speakers would be about how they seem less educated. The New Addition

On November 3 rd 2016, my parents took my sisters and I to eat at Jim's Kitchen telling us that we were going out for brunch instead of eating at home. We sat down ordered and my dad said that we are going to play a game, he told us that a life-changing event was going to happen and that we had to guess what it was. My first thought was a Baby but I didn't actually say that what I said was "We aren't moving again are we?" "No it's happier news." My sisters and I continued to guess a couple more times until I finally hesitantly guessed if it was a baby and to my happiness it was. Eight months after that my mom goes back to Canada to live with my grandparents and have the baby while the rest of us stayed and finished the month and a half that was left of school.
